IIT Delhi Admission Process 2026

1

Qualify JEE Main 2026

You must first appear for JEE Main and rank among the top ~2.5 lakh candidates nationally to become eligible for JEE Advanced. JEE Main alone does not grant admission to any IIT.

2

Appear for JEE Advanced 2026

JEE Advanced 2026 is expected around May 2026. This is the sole admission test for all 23 IITs, including IIT Delhi — a separate, more difficult exam from JEE Main.

3

Register for JoSAA Counselling

JoSAA registration typically opens in early June, shortly after JEE Advanced results. Register at josaa.nic.in using your JEE Advanced credentials.

4

Fill Institute & Branch Preferences

Rank IIT Delhi and your preferred branches (CSE, Electrical, Mechanical, etc.) in order of preference. JoSAA runs up to 6 rounds of seat allotment between June and July.

5

Seat Acceptance & Verification

Pay the JoSAA seat acceptance fee online, complete online document verification, then report to IIT Delhi for physical verification and final fee payment within the given deadline.

IIT Delhi FAQ 2026

What is the IIT Delhi CSE cutoff 2026?
IIT Delhi CSE closing ranks via JoSAA 2025 final round (used as the 2026 trend baseline): General — AIR 126, EWS — 145, OBC-NCL — 210, SC — 512, ST — 1,245. These are JEE Advanced All-India Ranks, not JEE Main ranks — IIT Delhi admits only through JEE Advanced. Actual 2026 cutoffs are released after JEE Advanced 2026 results and JoSAA counselling.
What are the total B.Tech fees at IIT Delhi?
IIT Delhi B.Tech fees range from ₹62,550 (SC/ST/PwD, and General-category families with income under ₹1L are fully exempt) up to ₹8.63 Lakhs total for General-category students with family income above ₹5 Lakhs. Tuition alone is approximately ₹1 lakh per semester for fee-paying General category students; the fee-waiver structure means actual cost varies significantly by family income and category.
What is the IIT Delhi placement average?
IIT Delhi's average B.Tech package for the 2024–25 season was ₹25.9 LPA, with a median package of ₹19 LPA — the gap reflects a small number of very high offers pulling the average up. The highest package recorded was ₹4.3 Crore. Over 1,200 job offers were made during the season, with Computer Science and related branches typically leading average packages.
How do I get admission to IIT Delhi in 2026?
IIT Delhi admission requires clearing JEE Main first (top ~2.5 lakh rank holders nationally become eligible), then appearing for and qualifying JEE Advanced 2026 — expected in May 2026. After JEE Advanced results, register on the JoSAA portal (josaa.nic.in), fill branch and institute preferences, and participate in up to 6 rounds of JoSAA counselling. Total B.Tech seat intake at IIT Delhi is approximately 1,239.
Is IIT Delhi better than DTU?
IIT Delhi and DTU are not close competitors on paper — IIT Delhi is a centrally-funded Institute of National Importance ranked NIRF Engineering #2, admitting via the much more selective JEE Advanced, while DTU is a Delhi NCT state university ranked #30, admitting via JEE Main through JAC Delhi. IIT Delhi's placement average (₹25.9 LPA) and brand recognition are substantially higher. DTU remains a strong, more accessible option for students who don't clear JEE Advanced, at a fraction of the fees for comparable core-engineering outcomes.
Does IIT Delhi require JEE Main or JEE Advanced?
IIT Delhi admission requires JEE Advanced, which itself requires first qualifying JEE Main and ranking within the top roughly 2.5 lakh candidates nationally to become eligible to sit for JEE Advanced. JEE Main alone is not sufficient for any IIT — this is the single biggest difference between IIT Delhi and Delhi NCT institutions like DTU or NSUT, which admit through JEE Main only.
